Bluehub Capital Annual Report & Microsite

BlueHub Capital is a nonprofit community development financial institution that has deployed billions nationwide to build a healthier future for all. Their work helps communities with affordable housing, good jobs, and quality healthcare and childcare — regardless of income level, race or any other demographic that defines it.

For the past several years, we have been collaborating with BlueHub to bring their annual report to life via both print and web. We work with them from initial theme development through wireframing and design to production and launch.

2021 Annual Report: Take the Torch

The theme of the 2021 annual report was “Take the Torch” to highlight the work they are doing in their newly launched initiative, One Percent for America (OPA). OPA is an online platform that empowers every American, current and future, to remove the financial barriers to citizenship and its enormous promise. The theme of taking the torch and spreading light is relevant to all of BlueHub’s sectors, so it becomes a thread throughout all of the sections of the report.

Custom Illustrations

For the design, we created an illustration that depicts the many different sectors and regions where BlueHub has an impact. We were able to use this illustration as a connecting visual theme throughout the piece, pulling individual elements from the main illustration into the subsequent articles. We designed this piece for print originally and adapted it for a microsite as well.

2020 Annual Report: Delivering During Disruption

The impact of COVID presented a lot of challenges in 2020. This report highlighted long-standing borrowers who pivoted to address unexpected issues due to the pandemic. It also featured new partners who are working on the defining issues of today — housing insecurity, environmental sustainability, healthcare inequities, and the racial wealth gap.

Distorted Design

We wanted the design of the report to reflect the uncertainty and disruption caused by the pandemic. For each section start, we created custom distorted typography of the word “disrupt”, an eyebrow that ties all of the sections together. Bringing in textures, a darker color palette, and layered and distorted layouts we furthered the gritty theme 2020’s printed report and microsite had.
