Seeing the Elephant exhibition catalog

Massachusetts College of Art and Design approached us to design exhibition catalogs for two of their shows, Encircling the World and Seeing the Elephant. The exhibition catalogs were sent to exhibition participants and library collections. We’re always excited to work with Massart since 50% of our team members are alumni.

The Seeing the Elephant exhibition featured contemporary artists whose work explores a wide range of topics facing India today. Neon Pantones inspired by the color palettes of the artists’ work were used throughout the catalog and culminate on the cover in the form of an abstract elephant.

The catalog won First Place in the 2019 New England Museum Association (NEMA) Publication Award Competition

Neon Pantone colors

We had a lot of fun choosing colors for this catalog. Colors chosen were inspired by works of the artists featured. Each spread of the catalog featured varying sets of colors that complemented the art. To really make the colors pop, we chose bright pantone color swatches including a neon pink. In preparation for the production phase of the project, we learned that this particular neon color was not going to work with the soft-touch cover finish we were intending to use. Because the bright pink was so important to the vibrancy of the catalog, we chose to keep the neon and ditch the soft-touch. Tough decisions like that are often part of our work, but a lesson was learned and now we know to look out for that combination.

Catalog Design

Showcasing the artist’s work in the best possible light is an important consideration for fine art catalog design. We wanted to create eye-catching books that promote the art without distracting from it. Using shapes, sizes and print production elements inspired by their themes, we were able to create clean, distinctive pieces to complement the work itself.
