Costa is a produce and specialty foods distributor that has been serving dining establishments throughout New England for more than sixty-five years. Because of our specialized experience in the food industry, they came to us looking for a new website to showcase their brand in a modern and visual way, to create an intuitive experience for their various types of users, and to build the site in a way that was simple for them to update on the backend.

A Heritage Brand
Costa has a strong brand presence throughout New England with a fleet of distribution trucks featuring their unique and recognizable heritage logo. We worked closely with their marketing team to ensure that the refreshed website felt familiar to the heritage brand, while also bringing a modern palette, hand-drawn elements, modern food photography, updated typefaces, and more for an approachable, modern sophistication.
Hand-Drawn Illustrations
As part of the design, we created hand-drawn illustrations throughout the site. We selected this style to reflect the inherent organic nature of fruit and produce that is sourced directly from the farm, and give the user a sense for the personal service of Costa. The illustrations also gave us the opportunity to showcase multiple items together in a category vs. having to capture a custom photo. The drawings also offer a unique visual element that adds dimension to the design.
Art Direction for Photography
Costa’s broad selection of produce couldn’t be captured with stock photography alone. We needed to highlight the quality and breadth of their product selection with custom photography, which we featured throughout the site and specifically in page headers. We helped to art direct photoshoots here in the Boston area, working with the client, the food photographer, and the food stylist to ensure the shoot was inspired, well organized, and efficient to capture all the necessary shots for the website design.
